{"id":3324,"date":"2010-10-13T15:09:51","date_gmt":"2010-10-13T13:09:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alexhernandez.es\/?p=3324"},"modified":"2010-10-13T15:09:51","modified_gmt":"2010-10-13T13:09:51","slug":"narrador-2-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alexhernandez.es\/en\/2010\/10\/13\/narrador-2-0\/","title":{"rendered":"Narrator 2.0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>Developers keep finding new ways to tell stories through games, and <a title=\"Supergiant Games\" href=\"http:\/\/www.supergiantgames.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Supergiant Games<\/a> comes up with a surprising idea which is, at the same time, a look back and a step forward.<\/p>\n<p>Their next release <em>Bastion<\/em> includes the voice of a narrator.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a look back on the origins of narration because it brings back the figure of the bard or storyteller. And I hope it is also a technical and creative step forward because, if they get it right, the voice will need to adjust appropriately to whatever is happening in the game. That in itself is not a technical challenge, because all elements in a game always have. Graphics, sounds, scores&#8230; they all respond to what the player is doing, so why not also the voice? The real challenge is to <em>write<\/em> texts that cover every situation while keeping the character&#8217;s voice (the narrator has a tone halfway between emotional and street-savvy), a reasonable length, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/fqQE6f2BzTs?fs=1&amp;hl=es_ES&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/fqQE6f2BzTs?fs=1&amp;hl=es_ES&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object>\n<\/p>\n<p>The big problem comes when looking at the feature from a business point of view, as it renders the game very difficult to localize into other languages. As the narrator speaks during gameplay, subtitles wouldn&#8217;t work. And we&#8217;re talking about an enormous amount of audio, which would result in a very expensive dubbing.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from that difficulty, the concept strikes me as very intriguing, and I think the voice gives the game a nice air of legend.
